About the Project
Expressions of Addiction is an exhibit of original photographic portraits that depict people in various stages and expressions of addiction. Each portrait includes a brief bio about the subject. These photographs are part of a photography exhibition that will help the public better understand addiction by reaching hundreds of thousands through gallery exhibitions, a television program, and Internet web sites. The Expressions of Addiction photography print exhibit has been very active. An Expression of Addiction print exhibit has been shown at the Radisson Hotel Boston, the Rio Las Vegas Hotel and Casino, the Massachusetts State House, Boston's Museum of Science, St. Francis House, Roxbury Community College Performing Arts Festival, and UMass Boston. In addition, Jeanne Blake's About Health cable television program recently aired an episode featuring Dr. Shaffer and images from Expressions of Addiction (click here to watch). As the project continues to expand, other exhibits are being planned. If you would like to schedule or sponsor a print exhibit, please Contact Us.

Photographic portraits are an ideal vehicle for raising awareness about addiction. As evidenced by Eugene Smith’s classic awareness-raising photographic essays, the objectivity of photographs combined with the subjective truth of art provides an opportunity for viewers to project their emotions and empathize with a photograph. The decisive moment of a photograph provides the ultimate opportunity for personal projection. Click here to read more.
